5 words explain the Saints monumental #Dickileaks PR cock-up

These five short words on the Australian website help explain why the St Kilda Football Club is making such an almighty hash of this Dickileaks story:

who is also Gilbert’s solicitor

Perhaps I should add some context, so here are the surrounding words:

St Kilda vice president Ross Levin, speaking after the Federal Court extended an injunction preventing the girl from publishing photographs taken from footballer Sam Gilbert’s computer, vowed that she would not get off “scot-free” and that today’s hearing was only the start of the club’s legal response.

“If she thinks that because it is too late and she is going to get off scot-free and she has already put the photos out there, well she is wrong,” said Mr Levin, who is also Gilbert’s solicitor.

A lawyer is in charge of Saints’ response to what is fundamentally a public relations problem.  This one piece of information helps answer each of the following questions:

  1. Who wrote Nick Riewoldt’s terrible statement to the media?
  2. Why are Saints doing everything in their power to feed, as opposed to starve, this story?
  3. On whose planet is vilifying a teenage girl a wise strategy?
  4. Who is running the show?

A lawyer-driven PR response is always a recipe for inflammation.  Lawyers exist to engage and prevail in conflict, often by discrediting, vilifying, humiliating or bankrupting their opponents.

The greater the stakes, after all, the heftier the fees.

This approach is designed to win cases, not friends. Public Relations, on the other hand,  is explicitly about winning friends– and doing that requires a level of emotional intelligence unavailable to most lawyers, however gigantic their brain.

St Kilda lost control of this story the second they let their lawyer-VP run the show.

You are dead right. And it seems to have been swept under the carpet the fact that regardless of the wrongdoing of the girls actions in releasing the photos, Sam Gilbert was in a relationship with a 16 year old (now 17) school girl. Hardly a moral leader himself from what I can see.

Agreed. They are making things worse for themselves at this point.

    Hey

dont forget this girl has spoken to the afl, many radio/tv stations/papers in previous months
they have seen the total images she has and have sat on the story
radio 3aw (Neil Mitchell) claimed to meet with her and discussed the topic then sat on it
carolyn wilson from the age announced that something big will hit stkilda soon
surely their ‘fear’ and silence is a telltale indication that they know there is more to come

finally why is this girl not being taken on in the childrens court as she is underage?
