Calm Thy Nostrils
This table should act as a sedative for people on both sides of US politics who are grossly over-interpreting the midterm election results.
Bear in mind, this is a survey of people WHO ACTUALLY VOTED on Tuesday. It DOES NOT INCLUDE the 29 million Obama voters from 2008 who did not vote.
That’s right: 29 million.
So even among a massively right-skewed sample, the Republican Party is as unpopular as the Democrats. Actually more so, by a bee’s dick.
Given this, who among us can seriously suggest that the GOP won a meaningful policy or ideological mandate? Who can seriously argue that the EXACT REVERSE wouldn’t have happened if the Republicans were the in-party instead of the out-party. Who can posit with the straight face that this election result was anything but a straight-forward reaction against incumbency in a toxic economic climate. End of story.
Of course, I hope the GOP misreads the hell out of this. My main concern is that Obama lurches to the right only to find there’s no-one there when he arrives.
As my classmates at Aotea College in Porirua would tell me when I exhibited signs of over-exuberance: calm thy nostrils.
P.S. 29 million.
